Shoe Size Width Conversion

Even though length is the primary determinant of shoe sizes, width in shoe sizes just as important factor while trying to fit the perfect size or convert between sizing systems. If you know you shoe size width in one system, you can use the table below to convert to other sizing systems.

Unit of Width Measurement

Width of a foot is measured in a variety of ways:


Measured foot width in millimeters (mm) – this is done with the Mondopoint system.

Lettering System

Measured width as a letter starting with the narrowest width.

  • AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, E, EE, EEE is the typical North American system and follows the brannock device standards. Per the system B is narrow, C is regular, D is medium, E is wide, EE is extra wide and so on. The D size is the norm for men and B for women.
  • 4A, 3A, 2A, A, B, C, D, E, 2E, 3E, 4E, 5E, 6E is another variant North American.
  • In UK the scale is C, D, E, F, G, H. F is widely considered median but some manufacturers use E instead. To add the to the complexity, one maker’s E is not necessarily the same size as another’s leading to even more variants.
  • N (narrow), M (medium) or R (regular), W (wide).
  • For children’s sizes in North America, typical letters used are M or B (medium), W or D (wide), EW or 2E (extra wide).

Manufacturers can differ significantly in the suitability of widths for these sizes. The A–E width indicators commonly employed by many American, Canadian, and some British shoe manufacturers usually derive from foot width, with standard step sizes being around 3⁄16 inch (4.8 mm).
